Salzgitter to build DRI plant in northwestern Germany

London—Steelmaker Salzgitter plans to build a direct reduced iron (DRI) plant in northwestern Germany with an annual capacity of 2 million castings as part of a move toward the decarbonization of its steelmaking, the company said June 24. Salzgitter commissioned a feasibility study on construction of the plant with an upstream hydrogen electrolyzer. The study will also involve assessing the development of the necessary infrastructure for supplying such a site with raw materials, natural gas and hydrogen.
