Iran DRI exports rise 75% on year in 8-month period

London—Despite the US secondary sanctions imposed on steel trade with Iran, some 702,000 mt of direct reduced iron (DRI) was exported by Iranian producers in the first eight months of the current Iranian year (to November 21), up 75% from the same period last year, according to statistics from Iranian mines and metals group Imidro. Iranian DRI was shipped to 20 countries in this period. However, future exports are likely to be restricted by the government due to increasing domestic demand, an informed source told S&P Global Platts. “Many (domestic) induction furnaces have started to use DRI instead of scrap nowadays,” he said. Iran is the world’s second biggest producer of DRI after India. The country’s main state-run mining and metals conglomerate produced 18.35 million mt of DRI in the eight-month period, up 8% on year, according to Imidro.
