London—North American steel demand for pig iron and HBI to bridge a looming shortage in prime scrap is supporting new regional capacity for metallics, according to investment bank B Riley FBR. AK Steel’s Ashland blast furnace in Kentucky and US Steel’s Granite City, Illinois, blast furnaces may refocus on merchant pig iron to meet demand from nearby mini mills, analysts led by Lucas Pipes said in a report to clients last week.
