Singapore—China produced 77.32 million mt of pig iron and a record high 92.27 million mt of crude steel in May, up 2.4% and 4.2% on the year, respectively, National Bureau of Statistics data released June 15 showed. On an annualized basis pig iron and crude steel output came to 910 million mt and 1.086 billion mt a year. However, some market sources expect output to rise further in June, putting downward pressure on the domestic market, where demand from the construction sector in eastern and southern China has recently slowed due to seasonal rains.
