London—The global impact of the coronavirus pandemic may temporarily slow down the move towards hydrogen-based steelmaking, but will not alter the fundamentals of this trend, a direct reduced iron (DRI) specialist said. After a significant gain in momentum during 2019, particularly in Europe, on discussions around more environmentally friendly iron and steelmaking processes including DRI, the expected dent to steelmakers’ financial health from the current market may slow progress on this front, making new investments more onerous, according to Vincent Chevrier, general manager business development at US-based DRI technology company Midrex.
