AK Steel, USW ratify new labor pact at Mountain State Carbon plant

Members of the United Steel Workers Local 9545 have ratified a three- year labor agreement covering about 220 hourly production and maintenance employees at AK Steel’s Mountain State Carbon cokemaking plant in Follansbee, West Virginia, AK Steel said Wednesday. The agreement will be in effect until April 30, 2022. The Ohio-based steelmaker has increased production at the Mountain State Carbon coke plant and “is now utilizing approximately half of the current extra available capacity of that facility,” Kirk Reich, AK Steel president and chief operating officer, said on an earnings call Monday. The company said the plant’s coke was penetrating new markets and had ramped up output.
