CSN's mining unit sees Q4 iron ore prices rise 26.3%

The mining arm of Brazil’s CSN saw a 26.3% year-on-year increase in its realized iron ore price in the fourth quarter of 2018 to $63/wmt, the company said Thursday. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the improvement was 10.9% from the third quarter of 2018's $56.80/wmt. “We were all amazed at [the dam collapse at Vale's Feijao mine on January 25]. The change in the price of ore was something that was not expected. We are working to improve premium by quality, and quantity is also growing,” CSN’s CEO Benjamin Steinbruch said Thursday on the conference call.
