US high-vol HCC prices slip as spot demand is absent

London—US high-vol hard coking coal prices led the drop Monday, as limited spot opportunity for high-vol A and high-vol B was expected in Europe for the time being, and lower futures pushed tradable values down on the day. S&P Global Platts assessed US East Coast low-vol HCC down 50 cents to $174.50/mt FOB, based on 58% coke strength after reaction and 19% volatile matter material. The Platts US high-vol A index fell $2 to $190/mt FOB USEC, based on 32% volatile matter, 1.1% reflectance straight coal and low ash and sulfur, and CSR typically in the low 60s.
