China’s ferrous scrap consumption up 15% for H1 2019

Singapore—China’s steelmaking industry’s hunger for ferrous scrap continued to increase during the first half of the year, with scrap consumption hitting 101 million mt, up 13.4 million mt or 15.3%, from the same period last year, according to China Association of Metal scrap Utilization (CAMU) figures. Crude steel production was up 9% for the first half of the year, reaching 492 million mt. This would equate to a scrap usage ratio of 20.1% to total raw material inputs that include scrap, pig iron, and hot metal.
