New York—The Port of New Orleans was closed Friday due to Mississippi River floodgate closures ahead of Tropical Storm Barry, according to a notice on its website. Port officials said they are closely monitoring Barry and there will be a weekend update on what to expect as far as the port’s cargo operations for Monday. Cargo terminals within the port and New Orleans Public Belt Railroad ceased operations at noon CDT Thursday. Port notices indicated the NOPBR will annul all jobs and shut down operations until Monday. The Port of New Orleans is a major steel and nonferrous metals trade hub that also handles other breakbulk cargo such as rubber, wood, paper, plastics and other commodities. Another major Gulf port for the metals trade is Mobile, Alabama.
