London—Bank of America Merrill Lynch expects EU carbon dioxide allowance prices to hit Eur50/mt by the end of 2020, assuming no recession in the EU. The price forecast compares with a carbon price of about Eur18.40/mt to Eur30/ mt in the period January to August 2019. “We are bullish carbon prices and see them hitting Eur50/mt by the end of 2020, with risk of overshooting, barring an EU recession,” the bank said in a research note Friday. “However, CO2 prices are not immune to macro. An EU recession could send carbon prices below Eur20/mt and keep them there until 2030,” it said.
