US 2018 ferrous scrap exports surge to a five-year high

US ferrous scrap exports surged 15% to 17.31 million mt in 2018 reaching a five-year high driven by a rebound in demand from Taiwan and record shipments to Vietnam and Bangladesh. The top destinations for US scrap in 2018 were Turkey (3.4 million mt), Taiwan (1.9 million mt) and Mexico (1.8 million mt). Mexico had been the second-largest foreign buyer of US scrap in 2016 and 2017 before Taiwan supplanted it last year to retake the position it held from 2012 through 2015.
