US imported record volumes of CIS pig iron in 2018

Russia and Ukraine sent record pig iron tonnage to the US in 2018 for a second consecutive year. The US imported 6 million mt of pig iron last year and 83% of it came from the two CIS producing nations. US imports from Russia in 2018 totaled 3.2 million mt, up from what had been a record 2.8 million mt in 2017. Despite the record volumes, Russia’s market share in the US import pig iron market slipped to 53%. It was the second consecutive drop for Russia after reaching 58% in 2016.
