US met coal edges down as Asia Pacific values fall

London—Prices for US high-vol A coking coal fell Monday, following the benchmark premium mid-vol Goonyella price in Asia lower. Goonyella traded for September loading at $168/mt FOB. And a weakness in prompt futures for premium hard coking coal led to a steeper contango. A lack of prompt spot demand pushed down regional prices for higher quality coals. Limited tons were heard to be under firm offer, sources said, but a potential contraction in US export supplies – outside already contracted volumes – supported a floor in the market as US mining industry costs rise.
