EU CO2 auction clears at record high price of Eur25.20/mt

An auction of carbon dioxide allowances under the EU Emissions Trading System on Tuesday morning cleared at Eur25.20/mt ($28.41/mt), the highest ever price for a European government carbon auction since the sales began in 2008. While prices in the secondary carbon market have briefly seen higher levels of over Eur30/mt in the early years of the carbon market’s operation in 2006 and 2008, Tuesday’s auction was the highest ever cleared price in a government auction, topping the previous record of Eur24.85/mt on September 10, 2018.
