India?s ambitious goal to achieve 150 million mt/year of raw steel capacity by 2020 and 300 million mt/year a decade later should not add to the world?s surplus of steelmaking capacity, according to Dr Aruna Sharma, India?s steel secretary. These goals should be viable "if the country?s growth in steel demand continues at present rates," she told delegates attending S&P Global Platts' Steel Markets Asia conference in Mumbai, pointing out that during the current fiscal ending next March, India expects to produce close to 100 million mt of raw steel from 126 million mt/year of capacity.
