Hybrit Development, a Swedish joint venture pioneering a carbon-free steelmaking process, has contracted Tenova to supply hydrogen-based direct reduction ironmaking equipment for a pilot plant in Lulea, Sweden, Tenova said Wednesday. The pilot plant is said to be on target to start production in 2020. It is designed to use hydrogen to produce direct reduced iron, and replace the use of coking coal and coke in a fossil-free steelmaking route with virtually no carbon footprint.
