Free-trade deal with EU vital for survival of UK car industry: SMMT

A free-trade agreement between the UK and EU is critical to the UK car industry’s survival, UK Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders CEO Mike Hawes said June 24 during a webinar. Margins in the UK car manufacturing industry, a major steel and aluminum user, were “wafer-thin” and a no-deal Brexit which slapped tariffs on vehicles and parts traded between the UK and EU would “immediately put UK car production into the red,” Hawes told the webinar to mark the launch of a report from academic research group UK in a Changing Europe, entitled “Manufacturing and Brexit.”
