US steel import licenses surge 115% to start 2020

US steel import volumes are expected to jump 115% month on month in January amid a sharp uptick in imports of semi-finished steel from Brazil, according to final license data released by the Department of Commerce. Steel import licenses for January totaled 3.07 million mt, up 115% compared with December's final import count of 1.37 million mt, but down by 3% compared with a final import count of 3.16 million mt in January 2019. The estimated finished steel import market share was 17% in January, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute.
