ArcelorMittal Italia workers halt strike as talks with company, government begin

ArcelorMittal Italia workers based in Taranto met with CEO Lucia Morselli Sept. 24 and suspended a strike expected to begin during the day at the steelworks, union sources told S&P Global Platts. The decision was taken after a Sept. 23 meeting with economic development minister Stefano Patuanelli, the sources said, in which he provided evidence of government efforts to find a path forward for the largest Italian steel producer, as well as Morselli agreeing to meet with workers' representatives. The government told the representatives it will likely become a shareholder, with funds to be made available to make the mill environmentally sustainable.
