Worldsteel crude steel production falls 2.5% in July on coronavirus pandemic

Crude steel production in the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association in July registered a decrease of 2.5% on the year to 152.7 million metric tonnes in July, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the association said Aug. 24. North America and Europe registered the largest drop, down 28% to 7.2 million of mt and 24.4% to 9.81 million mt, respectively. In North America, the United States produced 5.2 million mt of crude steel in July, a decrease of 29.4% compared to July 2019, while the largest European steel producer, Germany produced 2.4 million mt of crude steel in July, down 24.7% from last year.
