European steel plate market softens on ample stocks, falling slab prices

European steel plate prices lowered Friday week on week as buyers remained cautious amid dwindling demand, falling slab prices and high stocks at service centers, sources told S&P Global Platts. The Platts TSI plate indexes were assessed Friday at Eur506/mt ex-works Ruhr and at Eur468/mt exworks Southern Europe, down Eur6 week on week and a decline of Eur5, respectively. “Plate [is lower] because of supply, followed by weak demand and low slab prices – from March, slab prices went down by almost $100 from the Black Sea”, a German distribution source said. "Our customers announced they will restart from the beginning of next week but we still expect low demand because there are high inventories with customers and with mills.”
