Dillinger, Saarstahl target carbon-free steelmaking

German steelmakers Dillinger and Saarstahl said Friday they are aligning their operationstoward carbon-free steelmaking technology as part of a move to cut costs by Eur250million ($273 million) a year, and expect funding from "political leaders" to help achievethis because of an onerous carbon certification system.The cost reduction aimed for will be 60% derived from savings on the cost of materials andexternal services and 40% in personnel expenses, Dillinger and Saarstahl -- both part ofthe SHS holding group -- said in a joint statement. This will involve cutting 1,500 jobs andoutsourcing 1,000 jobs in Saarland, they said.
