This paper discuses the performance of a mixed free space optical (FSO)/radio frequency (RF) airborne communication system which consists of a dual-input dual-output (DIDO) relay based on decode-and-forward (DF), single-antenna RF transmitter, and single-aperture optical receiver. The Nakagami-m fading channel and exponentiated Weibull fading channel are adopted for the RF channel and FSO link, respectively. The analytical expressions of probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) about the equivalent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are obtained. We also analyze the average bit-error-rate and outage probability of the mixed FSO/RF system and derive closed form expressions by the Meijer's G function. To further verify the performance of the system, we simulate to compare the performance of the DIDO and single-input single-output (SISO) relay-based communication systems. The DIDO relay-based system outperforms the SISO relay system.
