Colombia, which has never elected a leftist to the presidency, continued that historical trend on Jun. 17 with the election of right-wing politician Ivan Duque, who says he wants to diversify the country’s economy away from oil. With over 19.5 million ballots cast in the election’s second round, Duque won nearly 54% of the votes, while his leftist opponent, ex-mayor of Bogota Gustavo Petro, won 41.81%. In the first round on May 27, no candidate captured a clear majority, necessitating a runoff.
