Crude from North Dakota is traveling by rail once again, but volumes seem to be taking the local rather than the express track. Data from the North Dakota Pipeline Authority show rail accounted for roughly 21% of Bakken crude shipments leaving the state, up from about 15% at the start of the year. The Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) latest monthly data show Midcontinent rail shipments averaged 281,000 barrels per day in March, well below its peak of 715,000 b/d in 2014.
