Cuadrilla 'Encouraged' by First UK Shale Samples

Cuadrilla Resources is “encouraged” by samples recovered from a vertical pilot well at its shale gas exploration site in northwestern England, and has just started drilling the first horizontal UK shale well. Cuadrilla completed the pilot well to a depth of 2.7 km at its Preston New Road site in Lancashire through both the Upper and Lower Bowland shale rock intervals. Core samples taken across three sections of the shales and early analysis of the data showed the rock quality was “excellent” for hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, with a “sizable quantity” of natural gas within the shale, it said Friday.
