China's strategic petroleum reserves (SPRs) rose 13.5% to 37.73 million tons (275 million bbl) in the year to end-June 2017, China's official news agency Xinhua said this week, quoting the state National Bureau of Statistics. That implies China stored away around 33 million bbl, or 90,000 b/d, over the 12-month period. The Chinese government is highly secretive about its SPRs and releases storage data with considerable delays. Refineries and traders also have commercial storage facilities, some of which are used to store SPRs.
