Political Protests Mount in Algeria

Roughly 1 million people took to the streets of Algiers Friday to demand the removal of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika from office. So far, the Opec member has yet to see any oil and gas outages, but a political resolution to the current crisis remains distant, raising the risks. In the largest demonstrations since unrest erupted six weeks ago, police fired tear gas and a water cannon at protestors. Friday’s protests follow Army chief Ahmed Gaed Salah’s call for Bouteflika to step down (IOD Mar.27’19).
