Total announced Tuesday that it has hooked up the oil and gas sector’s most powerful computer aimed at finding oil and gas faster, at a lower cost and with less geological risk. The IBM-developed Pangea III computer almost quintuples the French oil major’s processing power to 31.7 petaflops, which is equivalent to 170,000 laptops combined, it said. The machine ranks not only as the No. 1 supercomputer in the oil and gas sector but is also 11th on the list of the world’s top supercomputers, according to the TOP500 project, which publishes a biannual updated list.
