An inquiry in the Australian Senate into the impact of coalbed methane (CBM) mining on the Murray-Darling Basin-a massive area known as Australia's "food bowl"-could slow down planned major CBM developments in the region after the committee handling the investigation recommended giving priority to farming, and conducting further studies on groundwater and hydraulic fracturing.
