New EU Sanctions Against Syria Hit Operations of Shell, Total

The EU on Friday introduced a new, harsher sanctions regime against Syria, agreed a day earlier by the European Council, that effectively bars firms from the 27-member bloc from any form of participation in the country’s oil and gas industry (OD Dec.2’11). EU-based players with interests in Syria include Royal Dutch Shell, French major Total, UK-listed upstream player Gulfsands Petroleum and Polish-owned Kulczyk Oil Ventures. French-listed explorer Maurel & Prom is also understood to have an exploration interest in the country.
