PDVSA Oil Tanker Poses Spill Risk

A loaded oil storage tanker in the waters between Venezuela’s eastern coast and the island of Trinidad is increasingly listing and appears to be in growing danger of sinking. The Nabarima storage tanker, partly owned by Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) and Italy’s Eni, has been moored in the Gulf of Paria for over a year due to US sanctions (OD Sep.2’20). The vessel is holding about 1.2 million bbl of crude oil. Venezuela and Eni have previously said that the tanker is stable and posed no risk of spill, but it is now visibly leaning to one side.
