US refiner Citgo Petroleum remains important to Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido because of its US market share and ability to refine heavy crude oil from Venezuela, a former member of state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) said this week. “If we were to lose Citgo, we would have to sell Venezuela's heavy oil to international refineries to then be mixed with light oil, and that's not convenient for [Venezuela's] national economy,” Jose Toro Hardy, an opposition sympathizer and former principal member of PDVSA's board of directors, said in an interview on Venezuelan radio.
