A LITTLE MORE than 20 years ago, Ulrich Rattunde began building special-purpose metal-working machines in his garage in Wittenberge, Germany. By 1995, he had outgrown his garage, and moved into a new space in Ludwigslust, where his namesake company still resides. After growing its business throughout Western Europe, Rattunde (www.rattunde-corp.com) saw an opportunity in North America. The machine builder founded a subsidiary in Grand Rapids, Mich., in 2006, pretty much in conjunction with the first machine launch into the North American market, according to Richard Stadler, president of Rattunde's North American headquarters.
