Grounding rings are an essential part of the installation of traditional electromagnetic flowmeters. These elements ensure the flowtube and the fluid are at the same potential so that only the induced flow signal is measured. However, many chemical processes use highly aggressive media and these require grounding rings made of exotic and expensive materials, such as tantalum, nickel, or titanium. For several years Krohne has offered an alternative to classical grounding called virtual reference. The patented concept is due to the completely isolated electronics, and does not require the installation of grounding rings or grounding electrodes.
