摘要

Oliver et al. [1] were first to describe the metabolome as the complete set of low molecular weight compounds present in a cell that are required for its maintenance, growth and normal function and contributes to the metabolic reactions of a cell in a particular physiological or developmental stage. Metabolites are downstream , from gene transcription and translation into proteins. In comparison to genomics and proteomics, metabolomics approaches can provide a clearer picture of the phenotype of a biological system. In comparison to the genome and proteome the metabolome is much more complex in terms of its occupation of chemical space. In the plant kingdom there are >250000 known metabolites and thousands more can be added from bacteria and fungi. In the human metabolome database there are >45000 metabolites.
