Editorial: Adiponectin in health and disease: Current evidence and therapeutic perspectives

This special issue brings together a series of articles related to the emerging role of adiponectin in human health, as well as in apparently diverse morbidity. More specifically, this special issue starts with an update of adiponectin structure, signaling and physiology, with a focus on the effect of dietary habits and exercise on adiponectin, which provide the pathophysiological basis for diseases' understanding and potential interventions [1]. The physiologic role of adiponectin in pregnancy is subsequently updated, with a special focus on the two major medical disorders of pregnancy: gestational diabetes mellitus and preeclampsia [2]. The next seven articles successfully summarize current adiponectin-related evidence in apparently diverse categories of morbidity, namely type 2 diabetes mellitus [3], cardiovascular [4], hepatic [5], metabolic bone [6], autoimmune [7] and pulmonary [8] diseases, critical illness [8] and carcinogenesis [9]. Finally, therapeutic perspectives of adiponectin are attractively presented [10].
