EUROPEAN Union mining companies may have to declare payments made to governments who regulate their mines and processing facilities after EU ministers expressed broad support for tighter rules. In February, a debate staged at the EU Council of Ministers for competitiveness found that accounting directives should be reformed to ensure that companies in the extractive industry behave openly and transparently in developing countries, to avoid accusations of bribery and corruption.
