Russia's surprise proposal for a super-tax on its mining industry has hit the share prices of its best-known miners, including Norilsk, Alrosa, Evraz and Polyus, but it has also raised the prospect of other countries imposing higher taxes on their mining industries. Australia, which has fought a running battle with its miners over a similar form of super-tax on profits, is a prime suspect for following Russia, especially if there is a change of government next year, which looks likely.
