摘要

The conceptual design of a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna system packaged within a metallic handset for future wireless communications is proposed, simulated, and implemented. The presented MIMO antenna system is composed of four-identical slotted microstrip magnetic dipoles. The whole antenna system is installed within an emulated handset with a metallic back cavity and frames. A few antenna prototypes are fabricated and measured to validate the conceptual design. Owning to the inherent microstrip magnetic dipole configuration, the packaged MIMO antenna system exhibits a good impedance matching, a high element isolation, an acceptable average radiation efficiency of about 40%, and a wide beam coverage performance at 3.5 GHz-band. Compared to conventional single input single output (SISO) wireless communication systems, the channel capacity can be nearly tripled by employing the designed MIMO handset.
