GLOBAL SILICON SNAPSHOT: US silicon price continues downtrend; Chinese export price drops in a buyer’s market

Key data from the pricing sessions in Shanghai, New York and London in the week ended Friday December 14.- The grade 553 silicon price fell for a ninth consecutive month because buyers remain supplied by contracts which has led to slow spot trading.- The price could find upward support soon, though because spot activity is expected to be busier next year due to the decrease in contract purchases. This will occur at a time when a large portion of supply is expected to be removed from the market following Ferroglobe’s production curb plan.- Ferroglobe is planning to idle one fifth of its silicon metal production capacity in Europe and the US. Ferroglobe will cut 36,000 tonnes in the US alone.
