SolGold chief executive officer Nick Mather says the company is prepared to go solo in developing its Alpala project into one of the world’s major new copper mines but is happy to have larger players BHP and Newcrest along for the ride. The Ecuador-focused miner is set to have a busy 2020, with the intention to publish full feasibility studies on Alpala, a project in the Andes Mountains with an intended initial production of 207,000 tonnes per year of copper in high-grade 28.2% purity concentrate. At a time when greenfield copper mines are thin on the ground, drill results from Alpala and the surrounding Cascabel concession have been enough to attract interest from Newcrest, which owns a 14.2% stake, and BHP with 14.7%.
