Korean steel giant POSCO's Hume coal project is “not approvable in its present form” the New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment (DPE) stated on 11 December. Hume is planned as a 3.5 mt/y coking and thermal coal mine with an associated rail loop that would export coal from Port Kembla. After assessing the project, and the 12,000 plus submissions, DPE has referred the project to the Independent Planning Commission (IPC) for a public hearing, which is supposed to happen within eight weeks.
