Japanese utilities are increasing uptake of off-spec Australian thermal coals, as they seek lower prices for spot purchases, even though discounts for lower quality coals have narrowed sharply. Some in the market see the move as willingness by JPUs to optimize overall volumes by incorporating cheaper coals in their blends, however others say this could be a harbinger of a longterm
