US Oct coal exports down 32% on year – Commodities at sea data

United States coal exports fell by nearly a third in October to 7.3 mt, according to IHS Markit’s Commodities at Sea (CAS) data, from 10.7 mt in the same period last year. Volumes rose 5% from September’s 6.9 mt, reflecting the additional day in October. The analysis, by IHS Markit’s Doyle Trading Consultants (DTC), show volumes out of Hampton Roads terminals, namely DTA, Pier IX and Lamberts Point, have been reasonably consistent for the past few months, ranging from a low of 2.3 mt in July when river conditions restricted activity, up to 2.7 mt in October. Most of the coal exported from the Hampton Roads piers is metallurgical.
