US september met coal exports up 17% on year

Metallurgical (met) coal shipments from United States East Coast (USEC) and Gulf Coast (USGC) ports totalled 3.8 mt in September, up 17% from September 2018, according to data from T. Parker Host. In the first nine months of 2019, met shipments have totalled 33.8 mt, down about 2% from January-September 2018’s numbers. A met source said the totals were “solid” as far as the tonnes were concerned, but he said the hit on met is price. “I think you’ll see the shipments stay fairly strong through the end of the year,” he said. “But prices didn’t really start to fall hard until the end of June, the beginning of July. I think going forward you’ll see that reflected in the export numbers … especially after the end of the year.”
