Indian power plant coal stocks slide as monsoon rains persist

Coal stocks at Indian power plants slipped 5% in the latest week as incessant rains continued to affect coal production and transportation from mines to rail loading points. Stocks at 131 coal-fired plants (157.92 GW) monitored by India’s Central Electricity Authority (CEA) were 17.26 mt on 30 September, down from 18.18 mt on 23 September. The monitored capacity rose this week from last week’s 157.26 GW, with a 660 MW unit added at the Ib Valley plant in Odisha. Stocks were down 21% on the month but were up 56% on the year (see table).
