Sri Lanka awards two coal tenders totaling 2.44 mt

The Sri Lankan government has awarded two thermal coal tenders totaling 2.44 mt for delivery over the next 17 months, a power ministry spokesman told IHS Markit. The first tender for 0.24 mt of was awarded to an Indian trader for delivery from November 2019 through to April 2020. The price for the material, specified in the tender as 5,900 kc GAR min, 16% max ash and 1% max sulphur, was understood to be $59.99/t Free on Board Trimmed (FOBT), basis 6,000 kc NAR. The origin of the material could not be immediately verified by the energy ministry but a trader said that it would likely be South African coal, the country’s usual preference.
