CIL to launch special e-auction in days

After a number of delays, Indian state-owned miner Coal India Ltd (CIL) is expected in the next few days to launch its special import replacement e-auction, ofering 15-20 mt of coal to industrial users. The new scheme could impact South African 5,500 kc NAR imports a little more than initially believed, as three of CIL’s subsidiaries prepare to offer more higher c.v. coal than the 2 mt initially estimated. However, market sources still believe the overall impact on South Africa’s shipments to India, which totaled nearly 40 mt last year, will not be that significant due to the e-auction’s bidding restrictions and pricing.
